Free Laptops For TN Children
All school children in Tamil Nadu will receive a free laptop.
The government of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu has announced that all children at government schools and colleges in the state will be given a free laptop. It is estimated that around 6.8 million laptops will be given for free as part of this five-year scheme.
The aim of this scheme is to provide the disadvantaged children from this region, access to technology which would otherwise have been unaffordable. The state suffers from frequent power outages, which is also when the potential of these laptops will be realised because they can work on battery backup for at least a few hours. The state government says that this initiative will make the state more competitive with other tech-savvy states.
Not everyone is enthusiastic about this initiative as some have pointed out that this exercise is going to cost several hundred millions of dollars a year to the state, which could render the state government bankrupt. It has also been stated that this might be part of the election campaign by the Jayalalithaa government, which has suddenly unleashed a Rs 2500 crore welfare scheme, which also includes distributing mixies, grinders, and fans to 25 lakh households.
The authorities of the TN government have already started handing over the free laptops made by Hewlett-Packard and Acer to students. We hope that this is a sincere effort and not another election campaign.
With the first phase already in progress, will this programme be seen to its completion or will it be another election promise waiting to be broken and forgotten once the leader gets elected?
