Votes Up: Are Phablets Really As Popular As They Claim?
Just 8% of TechTree readers prefer handsets with screen size above 5".
As the smartphone space heats up with growing number of processor cores, RAM size, camera megapixel count and other numbers, irrespective of the platforms they run on, a handset's screen size is an important factor that influences a person's buying decision. Not only does it help you enjoy a decent multimedia experience, but it is also the primary factor that dictates the size of a phone.
After the supposed success of Micromax's Canvas series and Samsung's Grand, a vast majority of users and manufacturers were made to believe that bigger is better when it comes to smartphone screens. After having reviewed a lot of large screen phones (commonly known as
Flablets Phablets), it was hard to fathom how such a device that's difficult to operate with a single hand and equally cumbersome to pocket, could possibly be so popular. So we thought of asking our readers what screen size they preferred on their phones, through an opinion poll.
The results are there for all to see. The results did not surprise us but are good enough to burst the popular marketing bubble. Almost 2/3rd of our users prefer handsets with screen size not larger than 4.5" in size — the kind of phones that wouldn't need you to make a lot of wardrobe alterations. They fit right in your palm and your pocket both. In fact, 41% of our users do not prefer phones with screens larger than 4.3", which is sure to peeve off some the "phablet" lovers. Those vying for devices between 4.7" and 5" screens make up for 28% of our audience. Given that a lot of popular phones like Google Nexus 4, Samsung GALAXY S3, etc. sport a 4.7" display, this category has garnered a sizeable amount of votes.
And lastly, the numbers in 5"+ segment might prove heart-breaking for the future product managers of Samsung Mega series and some domestic manufacturers who have been looking to slap unusually large displays on their devices to make a Grand statement (or so they believe). Just 8% of our readers seem interested in over-sized phones.
We have nothing against people slapping large phones and tablets across their faces to "talk" to their peers, or with low-waist pants with huge pockets being the next style statement. All we intend to tell our readers is that just don't fall for some marketing mumbo jumbo that tells you "Bada hai toh behtar hai" and normal sized phones are a passé. It's actually the other way around. Go ahead and choose a screen size that you are comfortable with. After all, not everybody has similar-sized palms. But more importantly check for the screen type and resolution rather than just the size. After all you wouldn't want to make a grand fool out of yourself, would you?
