Debian Linux v7.0 Officially Available For Download

Latest update makes it easy to install software programs built for varying architectures, on the same computer.

 

The Debian open-source operating system project witnessed its latest update in the form of Debian Linux 7.0 'Wheezy' that comes with Multiarch support, and an enhanced installer tool along with various other enhancements. A Debian blog post mentions Multiarch support feature as being one of the topmost priorities of Debian Linux 7.0 'Wheezy'. Multiarch support allows users to install software packages from multiple architectures on the same machine. With this feature, users will be able to install 32-bit as well as 64-bit architecture software programs on their computer.

Of course, this functionality is of the most use to those running on an x86_64 arch kernel who have had to forgo many applications that were 32-bit-only. Note that this will not work well in the reverse (e.g., an Intel Atom-based 32-bit install won't be able to run 64-bit applications). Support for Multiple architectures is a notable aspect, considering that Debian doesn't release major-version updates too often. The last Debian Linux update was the Debian Linux 6 (codenamed Squeeze) that was released back in 2011. The next version after v7.0, has already been christened by the codename 'jessie'.

There is focus on improved accessibility, so that visually impaired users would find it easier to install and use Debian Linux 7. Debian says that this installation package would be available in 73 languages. Also improved, is multimedia support, hardened security, and virtualization support. Notably absent in Debian Linux 7.0 is Secure Boot support.

Users can download Debian Linux 7.0 Wheezy's installation images via bittorrent, and through Debian mirrors as of now. 'Wheezy' is slated to be available in the form of physical DVD's and CD's too. The bunch of packages above make the appeal of this particular distribution of Linux obvious - it is for Linux enthusiasts who tinker, want to retain their choices (including the desktop GUI) and aren't afraid to re-compile the kernel to suit themselves. The distro with a history going back 19 years, is also suited well for properly administered servers.

With the variety of packages included out of the box (the 64-bit version installation can run into 3 full DVDs), it's no wonder that a vast number of other Linux distros base themselves on Debian as the upstream.
