Rumour: Microsoft To Revamp Bing, Xbox And Skype Soon
Microsoft has been on a service revamping spree, even as Google and Facebook pay closer attention to design.
Microsoft, continuing on its product/service revamp spree, is apparently all set to carry out a major revamp to some of its most important services such as Skype, Xbox, Yammer and the Bing search engine. A Verge report states that Microsoft has rebranding plans in the pipeline, as the company, in an event (Design Day 2013 in Norway), showcased various videos, indicating Microsoft's intention to bring about changes to its services.
This reported refurbishing of services by Microsoft was at its peak last year, when the company changed its iconic logo for the first time after nearly 20 years, and at the same time gave its Windows and Office software platforms, new logos.
In the Design Day event in Norway, Microsoft's Albert Shum and Todd Simmons (creative director at Wolff Olins) displayed an old Microsoft re-imagining its products' experience videos and dropped hints at what could be the possible "new design" of Bing, and revamps in Skype and Yammer. According to the Verge report, the "new design" of Bing resembles a paper Aeroplane, which is a diversion from the current Bing logo design.
It would be interesting to note that Albert Shum was formerly with Nike, before switching over to Microsoft. Shum is also referred to in the internet world as the "Design Guru". Albert is most famous for his Windows Phone 7 series design. Therefore, Microsoft revamping the look of some of its products sounds quite probable.
Microsoft may want to revamp its other services; even as the IT premier continues to cope with criticism about its flagship, the Windows 8 OS. Microsoft also seems set to launch the next generation Xbox on May 21.
