3 Million Windows 8 Tablets Shipped This Year: Strategy Analytics
Apple iPad is still far ahead, with Android tablets in tow.
Microsoft has reportedly shipped over 3 million Windows 8 (and Windows RT) tablets in the first three months of 2013, according to research firm Strategy Analytics. The report also states that the market share of Windows-based tablets was 7.5% during this period. It is claimed that a "very limited distribution, a shortage of top tier apps, and confusion in the market" are the main reasons that the shipments couldn't have been better.
Of course, the numbers are not anything to celebrate about, because Apple has accounted for more than 48% of the 40.6 million total worldwide tablet shipments for the first quarter of this year with 19.5 million units shipped. Not far behind is Android with 43%, which is incidentally better than 34% it recorded last year. Despite being in the top position, Apple's shipment were actually down from 63% of last year. That goes to show that things can go any way in this market and success ultimately depends on a combination of good hardware and a supportive eco-system that packs in a huge number of quality apps.
