Google Doodles For Earth Day
Search giant celebrates the occasion with an animated and interactive version of its logo.
In keeping with its tradition of commemorating notable days through a doodle, this year Google has put up an impressive interactive and animated doodle to celebrate Earth Day that falls today on 22nd April. To get the doodle running, go to the Google search page, click on the Sun or Moon to see a time-lapse video that takes you through seasonal changes. As the Sun sets, you can see the Moon rising and tracing the same path across the sky, exhibiting its different phases.
Moving the mouse through the doodle appears to set the winds in motion. The G on the logo consists of dandelions (or ballheads) that disperse when you move the mouse over them, only to grow back up. Click on the mole hole, and a bagder pops right out. The two Os in the logo have been replaced by bear dens. Yes, bears do pop out from them when clicked and one of them even shows off the fish he's just caught from the pond. Clicking on the clouds makes them rain. Apart from moon phases, you can live through the various seasons such as summer, spring, monsoon, autumn, and winter. If you stick around long enough, you'll be graced by ants, fishes, birds, growing trees, and fireflies too. This is the 12th and by far the most impressive of the Earth Day doodles. You can check out the previous Earth Day Doodles here.
Earth Day, originally conceptualised by UNESCO, has been celebrated in the US since 1970. It has now become a worldwide phenomenon as marked by the UN in 2009, with over 175 countries observing the event. Several non-profit organisations come together every year on this day to raise awareness about Earth's environmental issues.
