Apple Continues To Lead Google In The App Arena

Google's Android app repository posted a healthy growth rate, and is bridging the barriers when it comes to downloading of apps.

Apple fans will be happy to know that the brand's App Store continues to lead in terms of number of downloads. But Android fans needn't worry too much, as Google's Play store is fast catching up. However, according to the App Annie blog, Apple's app repository has generated more than twice the revenue, in comparison to Google Play, in spite of the latter being refreshed with newer apps more frequently. Apple's Store has also generated higher revenue for the first quarter of 2013, in fact back in Q4 of 2012, it generated nearly 4 times the revenue as compared to Google's Play app store during the same period.

However, not all is lost for Google, as the App Annie report mentions that Google Play has seen an upward spike in revenues, and posted a growth rate of 90 percent in the same period. Google Play’s download rate is said to be close to bridging the gap between itself and the total number of Apple Store app downloads. Games subcategory under apps drove around 70% of iOS App store revenues and accounted for 80% Google Play revenues, between Q4 2012 and Q1 2013.

United States is being accounted for posting high revenues on the iOS platform, alongside China. On the other hand, Japan, Russia, and South Korea are said to fuel growth in Google Play revenues and application downloads. India continues to cling on to its number 3 position in terms of Google Play app downloads, a trend that has remained unchanged since Q4 2012.

With Google Play fast catching up with the Apple iOS repository, the battle between Google and Apple is all set to intensify in the remaining three quarters in 2013. The battle lines seem  to be drawn on other tech turfs as well, as both companies are said to be working on their respective versions of wearable technology; dubbed as the Smartwatch.
