Google Doodle Celebrates 160 Years Of Indian Railways

Replaces the second "O" in its logo with a steam engine.

You may complain about the IRCTC website, or the really poor tatkal services offer by the Indian Railways, but it truly is the lifeline of the country. And Google seems to realise this as it celebrates 160 years of the first passenger train to run in India via a colourful doodle on its India homepage. While the foundation for the railway line dates back to 1836 near Chintadripet Bridge (which is located in Chennai today), the first passenger train journey happened on this very day in 1851. The train's 34 kilometer journey ported passengers from Bori Bunder (today known as CST) in Mumbai to Thane. The steam-engine that was then used consisted of three locomotives named Sahib, Sindh, and Sultan.

Ten years ago (2003), Indian Railways celebrated its 150 years with heritage trains running on its historic routes, a special logo, and a mascot called "Bholu the guard elephant".
