Rumour: Microsoft Readying 7" Surface Tablet Range

Company could be planning to enter the lucrative low-cost market segment.

Microsoft is said to be preparing a new range of tablets with smaller 7" screens, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. The website cites insider sources having leaked information about the company's plans to begin production later this year, but doesn't giving away any specifics about the launch date. The rumour seems to be more feasible after Microsoft lowered the minimum screen resolution requirements for Windows 8 devices from 1366x768 to 1024x768 last month. As expected, Microsoft, has been quick to decline the report.

Currently, Microsoft has 10.6" Surface tablets running Windows 8 and Windows RT. While there is no doubt that tablets with such screen size are more productive, but it is also true that they are more expensive and heavier. Moreover, the WSJ report further states that Android tablets with smaller screens have been selling better. In fact, tablets with screens smaller than 8" have accounted for more than half the sales last year. Apple also has its iPad mini variant with a 7.9" screen in this segment. It seems to have finally dawned upon Microsoft that it is high time to enter the low-cost tablet market where it can sell more of its tablets, if priced sensibly. The report didn't mention whether these will run Windows RT or the full Windows 8.
