Apple iOS 6.1.3 Fixes One Loophole, Introduces Another
However, evasi0n jailbreak has been patched, for now.
When Apple recently released the latest iOS 6.1.3, it fixed a known security loophole that has been around for the past few versions. With this, a hacker could gain access the phone's data by bypassing the passcode screen. However, it has now been found that while it managed to plug the previous exploit, it has opened yet another one, which allows the same type of unauthorised access to the iDevice. To gain such unauthorised access to an iDevice, the user has to initiate a call via voice dialling from a locked screen and remove the SIM card as the call is being initiated. The contact list and camera roll on the handset can then be browsed, edited even. A user has posted a YouTube video showing how the bypass can be achieved on an iPhone 4. It requires a bit of trial and error though, as timing it right is the key for it to work.
Apart from the security issues, the new update successfully manages to patch evad3r's evasi0n jailbreak for iOS 6.x, which has become notoriously popular since its launch in February. The evasi0n jailbreak still works for devices running up to iOS 6.1.2. If you have a modified device, then it is better to stick to the existing version of the mobile OS. You can wait till evasi0n brings out a patch for the new version, which is likely to happen in the near future. Meanwhile, Apple has gone so far as to officially credit evad3rs in its release notes for iOS 6.1.3, which shows that the iPhone maker has taken the hacker group quite seriously.
