GPS Devices Will Become A Mandate For Chartered Buses In Delhi
Private buses and Gramin Sewa vehicles to have location tracking system installed by 30th April, says the Delhi government.
GPS seems to the government's answer to women's safety. After floating the idea of wrist-bands with GPS trackers, the Delhi government will make it compulsory for chartered buses (including school buses) and Gramin Sewa vehicles to have GPS devices installed. A report on Times of India states that a notice dated 15th March sets a 30th April deadline to the technology onboard. The transport commissioner has assured that a panel of vendors will be available for the vehicle owners to pick from. Non-compliance will not only result in a fine, but also cancellation of permits.
The GPS devices will be tracked by DIMTS (Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System) from its operational control centre, which doesn't connect to the police as of now. So how this exercise will benefit anyone is a big mystery. Apart from tracking location and speeds of the vehicle, the system will also feature a panic button to help passengers raise alarm when in trouble. But who will respond to these panic signals, no one seems to be sure.
With this move, Delhi will join the ranks of states such as Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka that also ply buses that can be tracked. However, looking at how GPS-enabled auto rickshaws, which reports suggest are no safer than the ones without any such system in place, we'll just have to wait and watch if the crime rate in Delhi sees a dip.
That being said, in yet another TOI report, over 600 GPS systems have been reported missing from the state-run Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses, right from the bus depots. So the government has its work cut out in this exercise, as non-compliance won't be the only thing it needs to worry about.
