Tablets Now Preferred Worldwide Over Smartphones For Internet Access: Adobe Report

Desktop PCs still miles ahead as internet consumption devices.

 

Tables have globally become the preferred device of choice when it comes to accessing the internet, surging ahead of smartphones, according to Adobe Digital Index (ADI). ADI claims to have analysed over a thousand websites around the world for more than 100 billion visits and has arrived at a conclusion that tablets with 8% have edged past smartphones with 7% of monthly page views. The larger portable devices seem to have taken the lead sometime during December of last year. However, the PC is still comfortably ahead in the lead with over 84%.

While smartphones have been around for more than a decade, tablets were introduced comparatively recently with the Apple iPad spearheading the category less than three years ago. Android tablets took off later and now dominate the market due to the sheer number of variants from different manufacturers. Thanks to browsers such as Opera Mini, smartphones have been used increasingly to access the internet on the move due to the convenience. The reason for tablets to surge ahead of smartphones could be due to the following reasons:

  • Larger screen sizes automatically make them easier on the eyes when it comes to reading text and consumers have a tendency to prefer larger screen devices as these are better than small screen mobile phones to watch videos.
  • Tablet prices have plummeted, probably even more than smartphones.
  • A host of Android tablets are available, leaving consumers spoiled for choice.
  • Tablets tend to be more productive, especially when the large screen size is complemented by good hardware.

While the situation in India is not specifically mentioned, the report mentions that all countries have seen tablet traffic doubled in the past year. The situation may not be very different here or at least it is heading that way as a CyberMedia Research report has put the number of tablets sold in India during the year 2012 at 3.11 million. Of this, over a third were sold in the last quarter alone and the sales are accelerating. The Adobe report also doesn't mention if more traffic came from the iPad or from Android tablets. With higher resolution screens being put in, newer OSes such as Windows 8 focusing tablets, and as the prices keep falling, we can only expect this trend to continue in the coming years and possibly threaten the PC as the preferred device to access the internet.
