IDC: Android And iOS Games Made More Revenue Than Handheld Console Titles In Q4 2012
Will phones make the handheld consoles obsolete in near future?
International Data Corporation (IDC) and App Annie has released some interesting findings, related to gaming. According to the report, combined consumer spending on games based on smartphone platforms outshone revenue garnered by handheld console titles in fourth quarter of 2012. Considering how smartphones today are capable of handling even complex 3D games, this doesn't really come as a surprise.
The report also claims that well over 20 billion games were downloaded on smartphones and tablets. Consumers were more willing to spend on games rather than productivity apps. And as expected, game developers earned more revenue on Apple's platform over the Android OS (excluding in-game ad revenue). For iDevices, the best-selling game has been Clash of Clans developed by Supercell, while Puzzle & Dragons dominated sales in Google's repository. In handheld consoles, Pokemon Black / White Version 2 (available on Nintendo DS) bagged the top spot.
IDC's gaming research manager, Lewis Ward has said, "While the most popular games and their business models are quite distinct, Nintendo and Apple were surprisingly close in terms of aggregate consumer spend on game software in the fourth quarter of 2012". So after eating into wrist-watch, camera, and PMP sales; mobile phones might make the standalone handheld gaming devices obsolete in the future too!
