Unified Licence May Lead to Higher Broadband Tariff

DoT proposes a onetime fee of Rs 15 crore for ISPs, so those who want to go national will see a huge increase over the current amount.

 

The Department of Telecommunication has proposed a new licence structure for Internet Service Providers, under which the ISPs will be required to pay a one-time fee of Rs 15 Crore instead of Rs 30 lakh which the service providers currently pay. It is reported that DoT is just following the rules of Unified Licence scheme where they are continuing with the current format along with introducing the Unified Licence (UL) scheme.

It solely depends on the service providers whether they go for the Unified Licence scheme or continue with the old format, but in case UL is opted then the internet and broadband tariffs would definitely rise. Mr. Rajesh Charia, President of the Internet Service Provider Association of India (ISPAI), while sharing his views with PTI exclaimed that VoIP services should be allowed under the new regime which would benefit rural areas with low cost internet telephony services.

He seemed to be echoing BSNL (AP) Chief General Manager Mr. V Srinivasan that foreign companies are offering the same type of services even without even being registered with DoT.
