Rumour: HP Plans To Re-Enter Tablet Market To Catch-Up With Competitors

This time, it will be an Android PMP powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 4; could be available later this year.

 

When it seemed that all hope was lost for Hewlett Packard after its debacle with the TouchPad slates, the website ReadWrite.com mentions that the company hasn't given up yet. HP is now said to be preparing a new tablet that is said to be more of a portable media player (PMP), slated to be launched later this year. The company is looking to move on after its failure with the open source webOS mobile platform, instead turning to Android for the new device.

The new tablet should pack in quite a punch because it will be powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 4. Thus, in addition to being able to play multimedia, it should also be a formidable performer in mobile gaming. In fact, this is going to be the first tablet to feature this newest iteration of Tegra. NVIDIA has been touting the multi-core Tegra 4 as "the world's fastest mobile processor" and using the moniker "super processor". To give you some sense of its power, the Tegra 4 features a GeForce GPU with 72 custom cores that should rip through games (given NVIDIA's extensive experience with graphics chipsets for gaming), there are features such as 'Always-on HDR' for photography enthusiasts, and a combination of the upcoming quad-core ARM Cortex-A15 and a second-generation battery-saver core to strike a good balance between performance and battery life.

Coming back to HP, the move to re-enter the tablets market could be partly because of the declining PC market and a lucrative market for such mobile devices. While HP could have gone with Windows 8 or Windows RT, it seems that the company doesn't really have much of a choice because these new operating systems are yet to prove grounds against their Android and iOS rivals. It therefore seems logical that HP has decided to follow the tried and tested path being followed by most manufacturers, which is Android.

Since Tegra 4 isn't expected to be available before August this year, the new tablet will also have to wait until after that. While HP has not commented about the Android-powered tablet, this should not come as a shocker, considering that a few TouchPads "mysteriously" shipped with Android instead of webOS in 2011 and it is also known that quite a few users have been able to port Android (even Jelly Bean) to that tablet.
