Samsung And Apple Dominate Smartphone Market In Q4 2012. Huawei Comes Third

Nokia does not feature in the Top 5.

This comes as no surprise, but it's official. According to an IDC report, Apple and Samsung continue their massive lead in the smartphone market. What's surprising in the report (some might even call it shocking) is the fact that Huawei has managed to grab the third place, pushing Sony down. And guess what, the Finnish handset manufacturer Nokia is not even in the top five.

Speaking of numbers, Samsung moved 64.5 million units in Q4. The Korean giant also controls 42.5% of the Android's global sales. Apple shipped 43.5 million units in the last quarter of 2012 (October, November, December).

Like Samsung, Huawei rose to third place thanks in large part to the Android OS. Although, its market share of 4.9% is significantly less than Samsung's 29% and Apple's 21.8%, it's quite a feat nonetheless, considering that Huawei is a new entrant to his market. The Japanese phone-maker Sony has bagged 4.5% market share, which is just 0.4% less than Huawei. On the 5th position, ZTE is just 0.2% behind Sony. Will the battle for the third place will get more interesting with BlackBerry's comeback bid? That's hard to say, and we are not passing any judgments yet.
