Apple Recalls First Gen iPod nanos

Faulty batch of batteries may cause the PMP to overheat.

 

Attention iPod nano users: If you currently have a nano nestled in your pant pockets, gently and carefully stand up, move the nano away from your family jewels, and place it inside a pressure cooker or a Total Containment Vehicle, if possible. This is your cue to figure out if your Apple product is a first generation iPod nano, and hence potentially explosive. You might want to head over to Apple's iPod nano replacement programme page to check if your PMP is eligible for replacement. According to Apple, iPod nanos sold between September 2005 and December 2006 bear faulty batteries, which may overheat and "pose a safety risk".

Unfortunately, the online replacement form does not list India, so that rules out getting the process done from the comfort of your armchair. The local Apple Stores that we contacted hadn't been issued instructions regarding the recalls. Moreover, as of this writing Apple India has not yet confirmed or denied if the programme is applicable to Indian users.

Fortunately, one of the Bombay-based authorised Apple service centres we contacted has confirmed that the recall is indeed valid. According to the service centre representative, the procedure will require six weeks after your PMP's eligibility has been verified. All you have to do is walk down to any authorised service centre with the device and claim the replacement. The service rep assured that a bill \ invoice isn't needed as long as the serial number is visible on the product. The replacement nano will carry a 90-day warranty, which is standard for factory-refurbished models.

In all fairness, this is a minor issue because there won't be too many people who are still using a six year old PMP, and most of them would anyway have replaced the batteries at least once by now.
