Lasers Can Turn Brown Eyes To Blue

Procedure permanently removes brown pigment from the iris.

While we aren't anywhere near Adam Jensen levels of functional body modifications, these days cosmetic surgery can augment almost all human assets. Add another item to the long list of cosmetic procedures, because those seeking blue eyes will soon be able to ditch coloured contact lenses and opt for a more permanent solution. Dr Gregg Homer from the California-based Stroma Medical claims to have found a way to irreversibly turn brown eyes blue with lasers.

Firing lasers into eyeballs sounds scary enough, but the doctor says that it's essential to destroy the pigment responsible for the brown hue from the surface of the iris. Homer contends that all eyes are naturally blue, but the brown pigment inhibits the real colour. "A blue eye is not opaque, you can see deeply into it, and a brown eye is very opaque. I think there is something very meaningful about this idea of having open windows to the soul", explains the doc. I must admit that it's rather strange to witness a man of science and logic resort to poetry and the abstract to push his innovation.

Currently in the evaluation stage, the procedure takes a mere 20 seconds. The laser alters the tissue bearing the brown pigment, which is then rejected by the body over a period of two to three weeks - after which the eyes finally turn blue. Homer claims that the tissue never regenerates, so there's no way to go back to your natural eye colour. However, prospective body-modders will be shown a shoop of how they'll appear with blue eyes.

The cosmetic augmentation still has a year of testing till it can seek an approval for commercial deployment. Homer claims that the tests have shown no signs of tissue damage so far. Well, they better not, since the cost of painting your eyes blue will be a whopping $5000. Besides, Crime Master Gogo will be very upset to find defective marbles.
