TRAI Relents, Okays 200 SMSes Per Day
Decision influenced by requests from mobile phone operators and public demand.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has agreed to ease the restrictions on the number of SMSes sent per SIM to 200 per day. The decision was announced yesterday, as a result of a growing number of requests to increase the limit from various quarters, including mobile service providers and users. In a statement issued yesterday, TRAI said, "The authority has received representations from some service providers and consumers to increase the limit of 100 SMSes per day per SIM. The authority has decided to increase the limit".
TRAI had clamped a restriction of 100 SMSes per SIM per day starting 27th September to curb unsolicited text messages from telemarketing companies. While this has expectedly caused a huge uproar from mobile users, our opinion poll about the effects of this regulation after a month of it coming into effect painted an entirely different picture. The survey showed that most people (59%) were actually not bothered by this restriction, followed by 28% being affected badly, while 14% stated to be "somewhat affected".
