Moby Dick is to whales what Xerox is to photocopies (and what Windows is \ was to computers, by a twist of fate). Google's current homepage doodle celebrates 161 years of the publication of Herman Melville's all-time classic tale. The logo recreates an important scene from the book where Ahab, captain of the Pequod, is taking aim at the white sperm whale with his harpoon. The lowercase "L" in the Google logo is the water-spout from the whale. (Yes, we noticed the five potential sexual jokes there.)

Moby Dick was not readily appreciated when it was published in 1851; only after Melville's death did it attain its cult-classic status.
