WickedLeak Announces Android 4.1 Wammy Athena Tablet With 9.7" Screen For Rs 14,300
Features dual 2 mp cameras, 16 GB storage, 3G dongle support, and an 8000 mAh battery; bookings now open for 14th October launch.
WickedLeak has announced the Wammy Athena, which comes with the latest version of Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). It boasts of a 9.7" capacitive 10-point IPS touchscreen with pixel dimensions of 1024x768. On the hardware front, it features a 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU and quad-core Mali-400 GPU with 1 GB of RAM. The slate comes with 16 GB of internal storage that can be augmented by a 32 GB microSD card. A massive 8000 mAh battery claims to keep it powered for up to 6 hours of browsing or video playback. The device's dimensions are 9.6" (l) x 7.5" (w) x 0.6" (15 mm) (d), and weighs 705 grammes. This makes it slightly larger and heavier than the recently launched Winknet Ultimate TWY300 9.7" tablet, also available at a similar pricing. Here are the specifications:
- Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) with support for Google Play.
- 9.7", 10-point capacitive multi-touch IPS panel with pixel dimensions of 1024x768.
- 1.5 GHz Cortex-A9 dual-core CPU, Mali-400 quad-core GPU, 1 GB DDR3 RAM.
- 16 GB internal storage, 32 GB microSD card slot.
- Wi-Fi, USB 2.0 with support for OTG and 3G dongles, Bluetooth not supported.
- 2 megapixel rear and front-facing camera.
- HDMI-Out with Full HD (1080p), Orientation sensor, Assisted GPS.
- Video Formats: MPEG-1 \ 2\ 4, H.263, H.264, AVS, VC-1, RV, VP6/VP8, Sorenson Spark, MVC.
- Audio Formats: MP3, WMA, WAV, APE, FLAC.
- 8000 mAh Li-ion battery with 6 hours of browsing or video playback.
- 9.6" (l) x 7.5" (w) x 0.6" (15 mm) (d), 705 grammes.
HDMI-Out allows the user to hook up the slate to an HDTV and take the Full HD (1080p) action to a larger display. Adobe Flash 11.x is supported, meaning that you should be able to easily watch most streaming online video content. With USB OTG, you can connect accessories such as a keyboard, mouse, and mass storage devices, just like you would with a PC. Through Google Play, you can install free and paid apps and games from the online store.
The WickedLeak Wammy Athena is currently available for pre-order at a price of Rs 14,300. It has been mentioned that early orders will receive a free gift, although no details have been specified. Shipping is expected to commence from 14th October. From what I can tell, Jelly Bean seems to be the product's only saving grace main advantage, along with its quad-core GPU. In comparison, the Micromax Funbook Pro and Wishtel Ira Comet with Android 4.0 (ICS) are both priced at Rs 10,000, with larger 10.1" screens but lower-performing processors.
Strangely enough, the image on the official product page carries the watermark of Hong Kong based DracoTek.com, which sells the exact same tablet under a different brand name for $240 (approx Rs 13,000) with free worldwide shipping, but without any sort of warranty. Nevertheless, if you really want to buy this tablet, it makes sense to pay WickedLeak Rs 1000 extra, as you get the added benefit of a one-year warranty — which, for mid-range tablets priced above Rs 10,000, is an absolute necessity that helps protect your investment.
