Ice Cream Sandwich Supports Native Screen Capture

ICS users will no longer have to rely on third party apps or root access to take a screenshot on their device.

The ability to take screenshots on smartphones is a very handy feature and shouldn't require much effort. In iDevices, holding the power button and the home button takes a screenshot of the device. Platforms such as Symbian, Android, or WP7, however, lack the ability to capture screenshots natively within the OS. Users have to download third party applications to do it. Android users do get a bunch of screenshot applications to choose from without having to pay for it. One problem is that most of these apps require root access, which the handsets do not have by default. Thankfully though, the utility apps we find on the Android Market are mostly free, which is where platforms such as Symbian and WP7 fall behind. Now, Android seems to have learnt from iOS and implemented a native screen capturing feature with which, the users can take images of their handset's screen system wide.

While this might not seem like a big deal, extensive users and smartphone geeks value the screenshot capability more than others. Android 3.x (Honeycomb) has this feature built into the OS, but sadly Google hasn't specified a particular key combo to be able to capture screenshots. Apparently, it will be possible to take screenshots in Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) by pressing the power button as well as the volume down button at the same time. Google has shown off ICS and announced the Galaxy Nexus a.k.a Nexus Prime earlier at an event to be held in Hong Kong. It seems like Google doesn't want to leave anything uncovered with this being one of the major OS announcements of the year.
