iPhone 14 Series - Praiseworthy or Memeworthy?

The iPhone 14 series appears to be a bit of both, though the pros outweigh the cons

 

First things first - If you are looking to import the latest iPhone 14 series through a relative flying into India shortly, think again. Because the devices arriving in the United States come without a SIM tray, which means you will have to compulsorily go for an eSIM, which as we know isn't really an option, given most of us own multiple connections. 

Now that this tough bit is out of the way, let's take a look at what the handset range has to offer and what made Steve Job's daughter join the meme fest? 

What do the top-end devices bring? 

This is the first big display redesign since the iPhone 10 in 2017 and both handsets now have a pill-shaped cutout replacing the notch and one that adjusts dynamically. Both the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max come with a faster A16 Bionic chip and an always-on display. 

Apple has also moved the proximity sensor behind the display with notifications now popping out of the notch in an animation. These would adapt and move around the notch as Apple leans more on to animation. 

Both devices get an always-on display that works with the new lock screen widget feature on the iOS16 to support reminders, calendar events, weather reports etc without actually having to wake the device up. There's also sleep support where wallpapers will darken to reduce power consumption on the devices. 

The A16 Bionic chip inside both these handsets include two high-performance cores that use 20% lower power and four efficiency cores that use one-third of chips from other handsets. 

For the first time, the iPhone is moving away from a 12-megapixel sensor to a 48-megapixel one. The new main camera offers improvements to low-light photography with a quad-pixel sensor that offers f/1.78 aperture and 24mm focal length. The ultrawide sensor offers macrophotography and a 3x improvement in low light. The cinematic mode on the Pro models also provides 4K resolution videos. 

And finally, coming to the meme worthiness of the handsets. The fact remains that the base model is way below in terms of features than the higher end ones, which means if you really need all of the above, you just need to spend more, much more. This time round, Apple has widened the gap between the base model and the top end ones, which doesn't mean the iPhone 14 is bad, but then it seems to be not much of an upgrade over the iPhone 13. The screen size, the refresh rate, the CPU, the storage options, and the cameras are retained with only the RAM gaining in the latest edition, from 4GB last time to 6GB now. 

However, the cost is likely to be the same as for the iPhone 13, which means that you are actually better off buying the older model by waiting a while as Apple is bound to reduce the costs somewhat to make the difference obvious.
