Nothing 1 Launch - Is it Much Ado about Nothing?
Carl Pei's first handset has generated enough and more hype over the past few months and now's the time for the true test

Carl Pei is the poster boy for Android fans and when he readies a handset, there's bound to be hype, not to mention the fact that this poster-boy is himself a past master at churning the publicity machinery. So, as India welcomes the Phone 1, which is as curiously named as the company manufacturing it, here's a quick look at what's in store.
For starters the Phone 1 is available only in two colors - black and white - something that Carl Pei repeated from his wireless earpods a year ago. The company isn't targeting the US markets, possibly for the very same reasons that OnePlus waited a while to mature before entering the market straddled by the iPhone and Samsung's top-end Galaxy devices.
The device will be available on Flipkart with a starting price of Rs.32,999 though the lucky ones who pre-ordered this 5G device may get a rounded-off price of Rs.30,000 with all the launch offers combined. The device comes in 8GB RAM with 128GB of storage and goes up to 12GB RAM and 256GB of storage.
One could say that these price points compare well with the iPhone SE 2022, the Google Pixel 6 and the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE. The device comes with a 6.55-inch OLED display, a dual camera module and a robust processor powered by a large battery with wireless charging and reverse charging made possible by an in-box charger.
Carl Pei has ensured that his unique transparent design language is visible even on this gadget. The Phone 1 features a transparent back panel that allows a direct peek into the components that the device packs in - right from the camera, wireless charging coil and the USB-C port.
The company is claiming rigorous testing and customization to achieve these results. And we all know what they're hinting at with this statement. In the past, Xiaomi had attempted something similar with a transparent design but had used dummy components to mask the real ones. Hence, Carl Pei's focus on transparency.
Another innovation comes in the form of the glyph interface which results in the back panel of the device actually lighting up through hundreds of LED lights. These can be customized to specific numbers on the call lists thus indicating who's calling. Given these innovations, the device obviously couldn't go for a top-end processor and relies on the Snapdragon 778G Plus.
