Did You Know your Netflix Account Could be Hacked?

You read that right! In spite of it being a subscription-only service, your Netflix account that you've paid for could've been hacked with some freeloader actually watching the biggest and best shows.

 

You read that right! In spite of it being a subscription-only service, your Netflix account that you've paid for could've been hacked with some freeloader actually watching the biggest and best shows. What's more, Netflix may end up penalizing you for the hack as it might perceive multiple viewing as an act of illegal password sharing. 

So, how does one figure out if one's account is being used by others illegally? More so, since you may have shared your password with family and friends. The best way is to keep a close watch on any activity that appears out of context. 

 

 

For starters, a new profile picture or style could be a sureshot indicator of illegal use. In case there's an extra account added or deleted from the last time you visited Netflix, you can be sure that a hacker is on the prowl. In some cases, it was found that entire profiles were deleted or altered substantially. 

In such cases, all you need to do is confirm that none of your family or friends changed or removed profiles. And once this is clarified, just set up a new profile with a tougher password that should not remotely resemble your username or actual account name or email ID. You can delete the profile by accessing Netflix on a browser and tapping on manage profiles. Then you could remove the rogue profile. 

Another way of telling whether your account is hacked is to check the Watching Now tab. If you see something that's not your's or that of your family or friends, beware. The recommendation section "Because You Watched" may give you a clue of a possible hack. However, as with the case of the profile, be sure none of your friends added to this watch list. 

Remember Netflix does send out a "new" device alert that contains the type of device, location and the date of the sign-in. However, there are times when the notification doesn't arrive, which is why it would be good for users to keep a close eye. You could check out the Account page of Netflix and browse through the activity under Settings. A word of caution - you may need to first log out of all devices via Settings before you attempt this task.

To secure your account, change the password once in a couple of months and also remember that a compromised email account could result in opening the doors to hackers across several of your accounts. The same holds good for a compromised credit or debit card as well. When you change the email ID, Netflix sends a code to the email you've registered with. In case this has been taken over by the hacker, you need to contact customer service pronto.
