Apple says anti-trust case in India should be dismissed because of its small market share

Apple says it’s market share in India is so miniscule compared to Android so how can it possibly be guilty of stifling competition?

Apple is being investigated by Competition Commission of India (CCI) for forcing app developers to use Apple’s payment system when users make in-app purchases.

By forcing app developers to use Apple’s payment system, every time an in-app purchase is made, app developers are forced to pay a large commission to Apple. So for every dollar an app developer gets from a user, Apple takes 30-40% cut.

Apple’s defense for abusing its market authority in India is that it has no authority because Google is the market leader when it comes to phones. It’s Google that commands over 90% of the market due to its affordability.

Apple is facing anti-trust allegations all over the world. The executive vice president of the European Commission, Margrethe Vestager, has said, “Mobile applications have fundamentally changed the way we access content. Apple sets the rules for the distribution of apps to users of iPhones and iPads. It appears that Apple obtained a “gatekeeper” role when it comes to the distribution of apps and content to users of Apple's popular devices. We need to ensure that Apple's rules do not distort competition in markets where Apple is competing with other app developers."

Is Apple trying to get Google into trouble? After all if Google is the market leader then they must be guilty of stifling competition so it would make sense to go after them.
