Instagram Chat and Facebook Messenger won’t get encryption until 2023

If you’ve been waiting for chat encryption for your Facebook and Instagram chats, then you have no choice but to wait longer.

 

Meta’s original plans to bring end-to-end encryption to Instagram and Facebook Messenger as a default setting is postponed to 2023. Meta merged Instagram and Facebook chats last year, with the intent to bring the same end-to-end encryption that it has for WhatsApp users, and that was supposed to happen in 2022.

The delay is supposedly due to safety reasons. As Antigone Davis, Meta’s head of safety, says, “We’re taking our time to get this right.” Meta wants to make sure that additional privacy settings don’t hamper its ability to combat criminal activity. 

There is a fear that encryption could help criminals target their victims more easily, especially minors, and thus give child abusers more protection. 

End-to-end encryption is essentially a lock that is placed on messages – and only the sender and the receiver have keys to open the lock to read the messages. End-to-end encryption scrambles messages during transmission so no one else can read it.
