iPhone Battery Health Confirmed To Be Meaningless

Apple has displayed iPhone Battery Health since iOS 11.3 in 2018

iPhone Battery Health % that declines over time is a meaningless estimate as it does not determine the actual battery capacity.

Apple started displaying Battery Health % on the iPhone after incurring public outrage in 2018 over quietly sabotaging performance of their phones to trigger shutdowns.  

But it has been established that not all batteries have the same capacity. Because of various chemical reactions that occur while generating energy, batteries contain varying levels of capacity.

But instead of being honest about the variation, Apple simply rates all iPhone batteries to be the same. 

A video posted by YouTube channel Payette Forward proves that iPhone Battery Health is nothing but a scam.

The video considers two iPhone models — the iPhone XS and iPhone 12 Pro. While the iPhone XS shows 83% of maximum capacity, the iPhone 12 Pro appears to have 100 % capacity.

The change in the max capacity doesn’t reveal the exact age of the batteries of either models. The only difference is that the iPhone 12 Pro went through 97 charge cycles at the time it was tested, compared to 466 charge cycles for iPhone XS.

Why would Apple show 100 percent battery health on the iPhone 12 Pro despite 97 charge cycles? Apple themselves say that “with lithium-ion batteries, the capacity diminishes slightly with each complete charge cycle.” 

The answer is that Apple does not consider the actual capacity as the base for calculating the Battery Health and instead uses the rated capacity to estimate how much battery life is left on an iPhone. The actual capacity could be higher than the rated capacity.
