Samsung Rumoured To Take On Facebook, But Issues Firm Denial

Claims that reports of it launching the social networking service early next year are "groundless".

Samsung is said to be planning to get its own social network, ready to launch early next year. The plan appears to be competing with Facebook, and take a plunge into that supposedly lucrative market. Codenamed Samsung Facebook, this service will be made available on a host of different internet-enabled devices such as mobile phones, tablets, cameras, televisions, and Blu-ray players. The company has been battling with Apple for global supremacy in smartphones and tablets market, and has been looking to expand into other avenues, including software and online content.

Samsung already has ChatON, instant messaging service that was initially limited to its own devices, but is now available for other manufacturers and platforms as well. While the new social network said to be based on Family Store service, reportedly will be available only for Samsung device users for free to begin with. Its eventual goal is stated to be expanding across different mobile platforms, as well as to different manufacturers.

However, the Korean giant has issued a strong denial about any such plans. It issued a statement saying, "It is true that we currently are working on upgrading 'Family Story' as we always thrive to provide consumers with enhanced experiences, but this is far from a 'Samsung Facebook' as some are claiming it to be".
