Android Phones in 2020 Could be 5G Ready

Of course, this may depend on brands and countries they operate in but the story from Qualcomm is that two of their latest Snapdragon chips have built-in 5G

 

American telecom and semiconductor giant Qualcomm set the stage for 5G mobile telephony by announcing the launch of two 5-G inbuilt chips. The company introduced the Snapdragon 865, 765 and the gaming-focused 765G that should considerably ramp up performances across AI, 8K video capture and integrated 5G which allows them to dump power-hungry modems when next-gen wireless comes home to roost.

The immediate reaction from the smartphone industry would be that the new chip could enhance battery lives of the phones and make 5G handsets more affordable when companies start manufacturing them in the Android firmament.

In a press statement published on its website, Qualcomm quotes their President Cristiano Amon as saying that 5G would open new and exciting opportunities to connect, compute and communicate in ways we’ve yet to imagine. “And, we are happy to be a key player driving the adoption of 5G around the world. Our Snapdragon 5G mobile platforms announced today will continue to show leadership in the industry and deliver on the promise of scaling 5G in 2020.”

Thereafter, Alex Katouzian, senior vice president and general manager, mobile, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., unveiled two new 5G Snapdragon mobile platforms to lead and scale 5G and AI in 2020. The flagship Snapdragon 865 Mobile Platform, which includes the Snapdragon X55 Modem-RF System, is the world’s most advanced, global 5G platform, designed to deliver unmatched connectivity and performance for the next generation of flagship devices.

The Snapdragon 765/765G bring integrated 5G connectivity, AI processing and select Qualcomm® Snapdragon Elite Gaming™ experiences. We expect Snapdragon 865 and 765/765G to power the most advanced Android-based smartphones launching in 2020 – regardless of whether users are in 5G or 4G coverage, the statement adds.

The company also unveiled a next-gen 3D Sonic Max sensor that they say is capable of recognizing an area 17 times larger than before which means that in effect it could authenticate with two whole fingers at once. For those who felt that the Android versions of fingerprint and retina scans weren’t at par with those offered by Apple, can now relax.

For, this upgrade should help smartphone makers to enhance security considerably and probably at a much faster pace. Of course, one would need to wait well into 2020 before some of these features get incorporated into the new models of Android phones.

Qualcomm had predicted in a report last month that more than 200 million phones with 5G capabilities would ship to retailers in 2020, but the problem is that chip-designing isn’t child’s play and only a handful such as Apple, Samsung and Huawei design their own chipsets for their handsets though the Korean giant still uses Qualcomm for some its marquee brands.

Writing for CNBC.com, Kif Leswing says chips used to be judged by their CPU speed and number of cores, but most of the improvements on this year’s Snapdragon chips come through a new process in which specialized tasks that are repeated over and over are given their own custom “block” on the chip and goes on to quote Keith Kressin, senior VP of product development at Qualcomm to suggest that this approach is how chip performance has increased in recent years given a slowdown in the advancement of transistor manufacturing technology that fuelled Moore’s Law, the concept that says chip performance doubles roughly every two years.

Another key feature that Kressin mentions in the latest chip is the enhancement of specialized hardware for hardware intelligence applications whereby instead of the CPU handling every task, it offloads specific AI problems to a block of silicon designed to work on these specific problems. This results in better images, videos etc. for the users. 

Does it mean that Android users would proudly step ahead of Apple users finally? Can’t say at this moment as Apple too has been busy designing its own chipsets for 5G integration and the race could be a neck-and-neck one.
