Xiaomi Announces Redmi Note 7 With A 48-megapixel Camera
The budget smartphone also features a stylish glass body.
As speculated, Xiaomi's spin-off brand Redmi has rolled out a new handset. Dubbed as the Redmi 7, this is the first smartphone to come out of its stable. It also gets a new logo at the back suggesting it is a ‘Redmi by Xiaomi’ handset. The ‘Redmi’ brand will focus on the budget and mid-range product development for its online portfolio while the ‘MI’ brand will target the mid to high end spectrum of smartphones.
With mounting pressure from Oppo and Honor, Xiaomi needed to pull up their socks in quite a few areas, and boy they have! Gone are plastic and metal builds as the new Redmi Note 7 boasts of a premium 2.5D curved Gorilla Glass 5 build on both the front and the back. The metal frame is sandwiched in between these glasses and gets a glossy treatment. The handset comes in gradient colour finishes which is quite the trend going on.
Another refreshing change is on the front as it now sports a 6.3-inch IPS FullHD+ display which now gets a tiny waterdrop/teardrop style notch at the top. It gets an IR (Infrared sensor) and a 3.5mm audio jack at the top. The fingerprint sensor is placed at the back of the device. The Type-C USB finally makes way and glad that they ditched the microUSB slot. You get fast charging support as well with the Quick Charge 4.0 tech. However, it doesn’t come supplied with a QC 4.0 charger and has to be purchased separately.
As far as performance is concerned, the Redmi Note 7 is powered by an octacore Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor. It runs on its full clock speed of 2.2 GHz unlike the under clocked version of the SD660 seen on the Realme 2 Pro and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2.
The mainstay of this smartphone is the segment first 48-megapixel rear camera, which is a Samsung ISOCELL Bright GM1 sensor with f/1.8 aperture. The camera can shoot a 48-megapixel images with 0.8um in daylight and 12-megapixel images with 1.6um when it gets dark. It is accompanied by a secondary 5-megapixel sensor at the rear which is useful for portrait shots. The camera comes with PDAF (Phase Detection Autofocus), EIS (Electronic Image Stabilisation) and AI (Artificial Intelligence) capabilities. The teardrop/waterdrop notch at the front carries the 13-megapixel selfie snapper.
The handset runs on MIUI 10 on top of Android 9.0 Pie out of the box and is powered by a massive 4000 mAh battery under its hood. Prices start at 999 yuan (Rs. 10,300 approx.) for the 3 GB RAM/32 GB storage, 1199 yuan (Rs. 12,500) for the 4 GB RAM/ 64 GB storage and 1399 yuan (Rs. 14,500) for the 6 GB RAM/ 64 GB storage variants. It comes in Blue, Black and Purple shades and is up for order from today in China and will go sale from January 15th. The company is also providing extended warranty of up to 18 months on the device.
