Nokia Developing Nano-Tech Waterproof Coating For Lumia And PureView Phones
Cambridge team uses superhydrophobic technology, which mimics the behaviour of water drops on a lotus leaf.
Waterproof phones can be very useful for careless people. However, people usually don't buy them because of their ugly looks. This scenario might change though, as Nokia Research Center has found out a breakthrough that will help the Finnish manufacturer create water-repelling devices without hampering their looks.
Until now, we've seen water-proof phones being built with an additional shell for protection. However, the researchers at Nokia are planning to use superhydrophobic coating for their phones. This coating can not only be added to phone's body, but also to its internal components.
This is what VP of Nokia Western Europe, Conor Pierce, had to say about this technology: "What happens when a drop of water lands on a lotus leaf… has baffled scientists for generations... but our team in Cambridge UK found a solution... Nano technology lets us do it. Superhydrophobic technology makes water bounce, it stops it, rolls it off the device and leaves it water impregnant, that’s the magic, that’s what we’re going to bring to the party".
Pierce also suggests that Nokia plans to implement this technology in the future Lumia and PureView handsets. However, I'm not sure when will it actually hit the market. Till then, check out the video demonstration of this new technology.
