Bejewelled, Easter egg-like Google logo commemorates renowned Russian jeweller.
Today, Google is celebrating the 166th birthday of Russian jeweller Peter Carl Fabergé famous for designing the precious and colourful Easter eggs (also known as Fabergé Eggs) with a doodle. The special doodle has Google's alphabets encased, partly or completely, in six colourful eggs made of gold, diamonds, and other precious metals. Clicking on the doodle, takes you to the search page, which also includes a knowledge graph detailing facts about Fabergé, his family, and the people associated with him. You need to be signed into your Google account to be able to view the knowledge graph.
Peter Carl Fabergé (30 May, 1846 – 24 September, 1920), was born in St. Petersburg in the Russian Empire into a family of Baltic German jewellers. He took over the family business in 1882 along with his brother, Agathon, another talented designer. His talent was noticed by the Tsar Alexander III during the Pan-Russian Exhibition held at Moscow in 1882, following which he was commissioned to make an Easter egg of unique designs to be gifted to the Empress Maria, officially hailing the House of Fabergé as the "Goldsmith by special appointment to the Imperial Crown". The stipulation was that the each of the eggs must have a unique and surprising design. He continued to make and present Easter eggs up to 1917, after which the Bolsheviks took over the business, following the October Revolution, and forcing Fabergé into exile.
