Delhi Metro Plans To Become Fully Automated

French company Thales offers automated safety, communication, and navigation systems that may make motormen redundant.

 

As the Delhi Metro gears up for its next phase of expansion, France-based technology company, Thales has offered to set up a safety, communication, and navigation system. IANS reports that this is similar to the one running Dubai's fully-automated, driverless train network. The rail system in Dubai is 77.6 km long and is dubbed to be the longest unmanned metro network in the world.

The Delhi Metro, on the other hand, sees 2,400 trips to ferry around 1.8 million passengers every day. The Delhi Metro Rail Corp officials have suggested that they will go for a communication-based train control system for the next phase of expansion. However, whether it will be manned or automated would be a matter of debate later on.

Apart from Delhi, Thales also plans to place tenders for metro projects in other Indian cities including Hyderabad and Mumbai. It is already a part of the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar metro corridor in Mumbai for communications and passenger information system, along with a supervision system in the Bengaluru Metro.
