Hackers Break Into San Francisco's Transport System
Demands the authorities to pay a ranso of 100 bicoins.
In Die Hard 4.0, Thomas Gabriel portrayed by Timothy Olyphant hacks into the city's transport system to wreak havoc. It is thrilling to watch such things on the silver screen. However, things got uncomfortably close to reality for the people of San Francisco when a hacker into the city's public transport system.
Computers across the city’s transport network, including at stations, were disabled with screens displaying a message from the attackers. The message read: "You Hacked, ALL Data Encrypted. Contact For Key(cryptom27@yandex.com)ID:681 Enter”. What hacker is telling the San Francisco's public transport authorities is that all their data has been hacked and locked. To get a key, they need to contact cryptom27@yandex.com. Yandex is a Russian service, which is quite popular among hackers.
Municipal Transportation Agency confirmed that its computers were hit by an attack. As a result, the officials shut the ticket kiosks and let the passengers ride trams and buses around the city for free. Thankfully, the hackers had no control on the trains whatsoever. It is reported that the perpetrators made a ransom demand of 100 Bitcoin, which roughly translates to $70,000.
