Puma Unveils Self-Adjusting Smart Shoes
The futuristic footware is meant for athletes for now.
Back To The Future is one of the best science fiction movies of all time. The characters in it, including Marty and his crazy scientist friend are unforgettable. Same goes for the heavily modified DeLorean DMC-12 car and the ever so cool self-lacing shoes Marty (Michael J. Fox) wears in the second part. While many of the things predicted by this movie from 80s have become reality, Nike's self-lacing shoes are yet to see the light of the day. Last time I checked, Nike is still working on bringing out exact replica of what's shown in the movie. Although the company has recently showcased the HyperAdapt shoes. Now it seems, Nike's rival Puma too has jumped on the bandwagon by developing the Autodisc series shoes that can automatically adjust to your feet.
At this point, only around 50 pairs have been out in the world. Most of these shoes have been given to star athletes such as Usain Bolt. Thankfully, the guys at Engadget managed to get their hands on Puma's Autodisc shoes.
Unlike Nike's version though, Puma's shoes lack the laces. To enable the automated adjustments, the footwear packs-in electric motors. It comes with a companion app that lets you achieve the desired tightness with a few clicks from your smartphone. Of course, it runs on battery and needs to be recharged like your cellphone. Puma has also developed a wireless (induction) charging mat to keep your shoes powered up.
The Puma Autodisc are yet to go into mass production. Considering the complex engineering involved, it will mostly be out of the reach of us mere mortals. Unless, our neighbouring country starts producing it in sweatshops.
