Facebook And Unity Partner To Develop New Gaming Platform

The new platform would allow access to developers get access to Unity 5.4 for exporting games to Facebook.

Facebook is in a war for sorts; the war for gaining more users and engaging them on the social network. One of those methods is gaming. For that very reason, they have partnered with Unity, to develop a new unique gaming platform, that will allow developers to gain access to Unity 5.4, and eventually push their gaming creations on Facebook.

Facebook's Jack King Choi explained the implications of this partnership, saying "Unity and Facebook are joining forces to build new functionality into Unity that streamlines the process for exporting and publishing games onto Facebook," before adding, "This will allow Unity developers to quickly deliver their games to the more than 650 million players who enjoy playing Facebook-connected games every month - a massive and highly-engaged gaming community that enabled Facebook to pay out over $2.5 billion to just web-game developers in 2015 alone."

From next week, by Thursday, a select group of developers will have access to the close-built of Unity 5.4, which will help them push their games to Facebook. These exported games will go to the Facebook app and even the website. Also, since a lot of PCs work on Unity, there is an offering in the ranks, to make Android and iOS game available to PC users directly.

If one looks at platforms from Steam, GOG, and Origin, there has been a surge in popularity of gaming on PC formats, and the reason for Facebook looking for a share, is fairly obvious. If not anything, it would help them gain back some of the revenues, they have lost ever since a lot of casual gaming shifted to other platforms, including mobile. According to NDTV reports, a standalone downloadable client does give it the opportunity to have bigger, and far more immersive experience, and the partnership with Unity ensures,  there is a large amount of content in a short span of time. However, it will be interesting to see if an audience for hardcore games exists on a network, that's as mainstream as it can get for its time.
