Apple Sells Its Billionth iPhone; Tim Cooks It Up
Looks like it is desperation time for Apple CEO. Revenues from iPhones are down, so are profits in Q3. Yet, Cook has reasons to celebrate…
A day after Apple surprised the stock markets with better than anticipated third quarter earnings, its CEO, Tim Cook, has followed up the hype with some more of it by celebrating the sale of its one billionth iPhone, and claiming that it was as a major milestone for the company.
Cook made the announcement at an all-staff meeting in Apple’s Cupertino office yesterday morning. “The iPhone has become one of the most important, world changing and successful products in history. It’s become more than a constant companion… truly an essential part of our daily life and enables much of what we do throughout the day,” Cook said after holding up the billionth iPhone.
Of course, true to form, the Apple head honcho kept silent about the declining iPhone sales, especially of the new models that the company launched last September – the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6S Plus.
In a statement published on Apple’s website (read it here) Cook said, “We never set out to make the most, but we’ve always set out to make the best products that make a difference. Thank you to everyone at Apple for helping change the world every day.”
Thank you Tim for sharing this celebration with users of the iPhone, however muted and false it may sound. For barely 24 hours earlier, Cook had told investors that iPhone sales had fallen for the second successive quarter (Q3) after recording uninterrupted growth since its introduction in 2007.
Apple had sold 40.4 million iPhones during the quarter ending June 25, down 15 per cent from the same period last year. (Read the full story) The decline underscored the challenges that Cook and his team faces in the wake of globally saturating smartphone markets and heightened competition from cheaper brands.
An article published in the Sydney Morning Herald (read it here) questions Cook’s euphoric reaction by juxtaposing the data that he shared a day ago. Cook had told investors that Apple’s revenues from its services such as Music, App Store, Apple Pay and iCloud was growing faster than its product sales.
Sales from digital services grew 19 per cent over the past year and 33 per cent of the past two years to USD 5.9 billion, making it a bigger business now than all the hardware sales. In fact, Cook touted this segment as a future Fortune 100 company all by itself.
