Is Reliance Jio Planning To Launch An IP-based TV Service?
Imports of IP set-top-boxes indicate so.

Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio has reportedly begun importing Internet Protocol (IP) set-top boxes (STBs) prior to the commercial launch of operations in India. Jio has already imported more 17,000 STBs from Vietnam, according to TelecomTalk. Import data from Zauba lists per unit cost at INR 5,540.
The import of IP set top box seems to indicate that Jio may launch an IP-based TV service along with telecom services.
The 4G entrant is reportedly planning to use its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) connectivity to offer a range of services that includes IP TV service. The company is already offering app-based Live TV service to customers for the test launch in India.
The company has already procured a pan-India multi-system operator (MSO) licence from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB), through its Jio Media subsidiary.
An earlier report from ET said that Reliance Retail is planning to launch a range of smart LED TVs under the Lyf brand which is currently known for its 4G-LTE smartphones. Reliance is currently piloting TV sets with 43, 50 and 65-inch screens. These high definition 4K screens will pair with Jio’s upcoming 4G high speed internet services. Currently they are on sale only at Reliance Digital stores and via employee referrals.
