Microsoft To Discontinue Surface 3 This year; Hints At Surface Phone Innovations

An executive claims that the next Windows 10 phone will be ‘category innovating’.

 

Rumours about the Microsoft Surface Phone have been rife for a while now, and most expect it to be launched sometime early next year. Recently, Kevin Gallo, Microsoft’s Corporate VP of Windows, threw a little more light on the company’s aims for its next smartphone, touted as the Surface Phone.

Gallo told The Register that Microsoft’s next phone will be a high-end version geared towards the enterprise market. While he didn't specifically mention the Surface Phone, he did talk about the company’s newfound focus on the enterprise market. The company is aims to bring the high-end Surface products’ thought process to its OEM products as well. He hinted that the next Windows 10 mobile phone will be 'category innovating'.

"We're really aligned to what we've done on the Windows desktop… which is we'll lead with some high end and category innovation like we've done with Surface, and OEMs will go and build the breadth of the catalogue," Gallo said.

In late 2015, Microsoft CMO Chris Capossela said that the company was developing a 'breakthrough' Surface Phone. It was also rumoured that Microsoft is planning to launch three models targeted at regular consumers, business-specific, and enthusiasts.
The Surface Phone is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 830 SoC paired with up to 8GB of RAM. It is also expected to come with 128GB of integrated storage, as well as Continuum support.

Microsoft also confirmed, separately, that production of the Surface 3 tablet will cease come December. The company is also debating whether or not it should launch its successor. The tablet wasn’t as successful as the Surface Pro 4, or the Surface Book, so Microsoft might simply abandon the product line altogether. To bump up sales for the Surface 3, the company has been slashing the price of the tablet all through last year.

"Since launching Surface 3 over a year ago, we have seen strong demand and satisfaction amongst our customers. Inventory is now limited, and by the end of December 2016, we will no longer manufacture Surface 3 devices," Microsoft told ZDNet.
