Government To Regulate Drone Operations

The Union Government to soon formulate a policy that will identify drones using UIN and regulate its operations.

 

From wedding videography to experimental usage drones are increasingly being used across the length and breadth of the country. As per the report by Medianama, a draft policy for drones has been made available online by the Director General of Civil Aviation. The drone policy, titled "Guidelines for obtaining Unique Identification Number (UIN) and Operation of Civil Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) can viewed as a progressive and strategic move to ensure security and thwart any untoward incidents.

All unmanned aircraft intended to be operated in India will require a Unique Identification Number (UIN) issued from DGCA. The UIN can be granted only to a citizen of India or a company or a corporate body. For corporate use it has to be registered and should have its principal place of business within India; and its chairman se well as at least two-thirds of its directors are citizens of India. Users will have to install a fireproof ID plate inscribed with the UIN on the drone before they can operate it

The policy also lists out guidelines for training remote pilots who should have completed 18 years of age as well as the regulations on controlled airspace. Drones operated above 200ft will be regulated. The UAS operator will not be allowed to fly the UA at the time when rain or thunderstorm warning is in force. Import of drones will require prior approval from DGCA based on which DGFT shall provide license for import of UAS.
