Rumour: Apollo Upgrade Doubtful For Current Windows Phone Handsets
WP evangelist retracts original claim of full availability, says his comments were lost in translation.
The Microsoft Windows Phone evangelist who had hit headlines earlier this year by stating that all WP Mango devices will receive Apollo upgrade, has now retracted his statement. Nuno Silva has stated this on his MSDN Blogs post to clarify his statements from an interview with a Portuguese website Zwame. If true, current WP handset owners' joy will be short-lived, as this will leave them in the lurch being stuck with a phone running an OS that cannot be upgraded. In the post, he mentions that he merely wanted to say that existing Windows Phone applications will run on Apollo, the next version of the mobile OS.
Silva posted, "I mistakenly confused app compatibility with phone updateability, which caused the rumours we saw yesterday. I did not intend to give the impression I was offering new guidance on any products under development or their upgradability. While we have given Windows Phone developers this preliminary guidance on app compatibility to help them with long term project planning, Microsoft does not have any further news to share on future products at this time".
Going by his current stance, those who have risked going for a smartphone with the relatively new OS will be sorely disappointed. Let's hope that Microsoft does not officially state the same, as it will bring bad publicity to the nascent platform.
