Scientists in Assam Develop New Technology to Produce Potable Water
A bio-degradable nano technology which will prove to be a game changer for civic water treatment plants.
Scientists in Assam have come up with a new eco-friendly Nano technology to develop potable water, by harnessing water-softening applications. The technology holds enormous potential in water treatment plants as per the Institute of Advance Study in Science & Technology (IASST).
A group of scientists from the institute tailored a biopolymer from chitosan, a substance which is extracted from the skeleton of shellfish like shrimps, lobsters and crabs. Carbon Nano particles are then allowed to settle down on chitosan, which serves as a base.
"In the biopolymer, nanoparticles are the functional parts of the technology. They remove calcium and magnesium components of water through ion exchange, the same process that is used by common water purifiers,'' said Devasish Chowdhury, associate professor, physical sciences division, IASST.
"This material is the first of its kind with potential to act as a biodegradable and green material for water-softening applications," added Chowdhury.
As per the scientists, this new technology is also biodegradable, unlike the existing water softening processes which utilize synthetic resins.
