Facebook Teams Up With BSNL To Set Up WiFi Hotspots In Rural India
While Facebook would be just sponsoring the whole setup, it clearly looks like the social media giant is not a part of the revenue sharing model.
Facebook has recently announced that it would be setting up 100 WiFi sites in rural areas of western and southern India to enable the rural users gain the best of the digital medium.
This move by Facebook towards the Digital India initiative has been facilitated by the state-run telecom operator BSNL.
The company has announced that Facebook will be spending Rs 5 crore every year for the WiFi Hotspots in the country. This means that the social media giant will be paying Rs 5 lakh for BSNL bandwidth for each hotspot every year.

Having said this, the revenue share model has reportedly been made between BSNL and Quad Zen, the BSNL selected vendor to set up hotspots, while Facebook is only sponsoring.
It is also being said that the agreement to sponsor the WiFi Hotspots in rural areas of India is currently for 3 years which may also extend for another 2 years.
Additionally, BSNL has reportedly received interest from a couple of ministers to sponsor the setting up of WiFi hotspots in villages in India, especially to those villages which they have adopted under Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY).

With such moves, it clearly looks like India is slowly taking its steps to become a digitally transformed country with every place being connected to the Cyber World.
Also, it looks like the meeting between Mark Zuckerberg and PM Narendra Modi is turning out to be somehow useful for the citizens of India.
