23rd Sep 2015With Prime Minister Narendra Modi pushing hard to make India a digitally stable country, we have been witnessing a number of Digital India initiatives.
While all efforts are being put up by the government, the Internet growth still falls behind to that of many other countries, according to 'The State of Broadband 2015' report by UN Broadband Commission for Digital Development.
The report states that India's broadband penetration ranking has fallen down to 155 from the 113th position in 2013 and 106 in 2012. Also, the fixed broadband subscriptions ranking has fallen down to 131 from 125 in 2013 and 122 in 2012.
Along with this, while India maintained 75th Rank globally in the percentage of households with Internet during 2012 and 2013, the ranking seems to have fallen down even in this segment to 80 in 2014.
While we cannot see a positive growth in these three segments, India has, however, managed to see a slight ray of hope by climbing up the ladder from 142nd rank in 2013 to 136th position in the percentage of Individuals using the Internet. Also, among the developing countries, India has seen a considerable growth from 98 in 2012 and 95 in 2013 to 80th position currently.
This definitely shows that there is a gradual improvement in the usage of Internet among the citizens of India.
Here is a chart comparing rankings of India for three years: 2013, 2014 and 2015.
Having said this, the report also suggests that Internet should be available in regional languages too, especially in countries with high linguistic diversity like India, Africa and South-East Asia.
