11th Apr 2012When we think about the word "gizmo", we instantly visualise a gadget that is hi-tech, cutting edge, and therefore expensive. However, some of these devices are really over-the-top, with the weirdest imagination applied to create them, or rather a lack of it for that matter. We have a collection of five of the most bizarre of such devices for you. Take a look.
Beauty And The Geek Trousers
While they appear like normal trousers, a closer look reveals the gadgetry that lies within, and even over it. To start, there is a wireless full-size QWERTY keyboard that stretches from one lap to another, a wireless mouse that fits into a back pocket, and speakers built into the knees. How do they connect to your PC or laptop? They use wireless USB, another cutting edge technology that is still out of reach, for the most of us. While pricing is not available, you can check out these concept-design trousers at http://www.nieuweheren.com/.Doryu 2-16
First manufactured in 1955 in Japan, this is a miniature still camera shaped like a 9 mm handgun, complete with magnesium flash cartridges shaped like bullets. It had 16 mm film in special cassettes producing photographs of 10 x 10 mm. The amazing thing about this camera, is that you point it like a gun and shoot. Instead of shooting out of the front like a bullet, the flash cartridge pops up and produces a bang as it ignites and illuminates the subject. Really interesting concept and design, but you wouldn't want to use it in high security areas for obvious reasons. You can still get one at Christie.com, if you are ready to let go of a cool $24,300 (Rs12.5 lakhs).Kikkerland Grass Charging Station
These days we have so many devices in our lives that we end up with a mess of wires on the desk when these devices get charged. Fret not, as there is a nice and easy way to get rid of the wiry mess, and it even looks "green". Kikkerland Grass Charging Station appears like a box with grass planted inside it. However, it really is a multi-charging station that can charge your camera, smartphone, iPod, or any other device. The cables are laid beneath the artificial grass and are therefore not easily visible at a glance. A power cord connects to the base of the station. This gadget is now available at a cheaper price of $19 (Rs 1000). However, what if your mom mistakes it for real grass and decides to water it instead? I'm guessing you would want to loose your precious gadgets that way.Blade Runner Style LED Umbrella
This next gadget will instantly make you feel nostalgic, especially if you are a fan of the Blade Runner movie. While it looks like a normal umbrella when folded, open it and you will notice that it has an LED-lit shaft that is supposed to light up your way, as you walk through dark alleys on a rainy night. Of course it won't help you locate replicants like in the movie, but you can at least opt for white or blue LED colour variants. If you get bored, you can just get rid of the cloth and the skeleton and you have your own light sabre. For just $25 (Rs1300), this is not a bad deal, is it?Roxxxy TrueCompanion
If we hold a competition to find out which is the weirdest of them all, this one will surely take the cake. Officially termed as a "sex robot", Roxxxy is a full-size interactive sex doll made to mimic a real woman. With synthetic skin and artificial intelligence, this doll can learn the likes and dislikes of its owner. In addition to its primary function, this doll can supposedly "carry on a discussion and express her love. She can talk to you and feel your touch". That sounds more creepy than exciting to me. Probably designed to entertain those lonely hearts who want a no-maintenance "girlfriend", Roxxxy can be yours at a down-payment of $7000 (Rs 3.6 lakhs).
