Back to the Future movie been one of the best sci-fi movies of the last century. This movie was followed by two instalments: Back to the Future Part II (1989) and Back to the Future Part III (1990). I wasn't even born when the first part released in 1985, but like any movie aficionado, I couldn't resist the charm of 80s' films and ended-up watching the trilogy multiple times. Unlike today's pretentious movies, everything in the Back to the Future feels effortless and adorable. Director, Robert Zemeckis, is one of the best in the business when it comes to story telling. His other films include Forrest Gump and Cast Away, so you get a fair idea of what I'm talking about. Michael J. Fox, in his career defining role, has brilliantly portrayed a likeable teen protagonist Marty. His scientist friend "Doc" Brown  was equality well depicted by Christopher Lloyd. Thanks to this movie, Lloyd became the face of scientists in pop culture. And dare I forget Doc's time-machine built from a modified DeLorean car.

As you would already know or perhaps would have guessed so far, Back to the Future is about time travel. In part one, Marty and Doc visit their past (1955). In the sequel, they go to the future. The fact that the movie takes place in 2015 has inspired me to pen this article. We always imagine future to be weird and so did the film-makers. The guys behind the conceptualisation had interesting expectations from the year 2015. Here's a quick look at some of the predictions that turned out to be true. Plus, some more that did not materialise:

Large TV Screens
In 80s, cathode ray tube television sets were considered high-tech. Still, the film-makers were quite sure that huge flat screen TVs will be a common sight in the year 2015. And yes, they were right on the money. Flat-panel LCD TVs have taken over living rooms. The technology has become so affordable that almost all manufacturers have stopped producing CRTs.

Wearables
In the movie, teenagers are shown wearing weird head-gear that covers their eyes. These gadgets also allow them to receive phone calls. That's very much what Google Glass is capable of doing. The only difference here is that Google's product looks less ridiculous.

Video Conferencing
At his residence, Marty chats with his office colleague via video conferencing. In 80s, this idea must have sounded far-fetched, but now we have Skype.

Digital Billboards
In future, Marty gets taken aback by a gigantic video billboards. Today, it's difficult for us to comprehend his reaction because such sign-boards are now a reality.

Hideous Fashion
The movie predicted that people will have a weird fashion sense (or lack of it) in the future. While not entirely true, it applies to a certain bunch of celebrities. In fact, looking at Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry, I must admit that the guys behind Back to the Future underestimated the level of douchebaggery we humans can achieve.

Biometric Door Locks
In Back to the Future Part 2, they have key-less door locks. The security system is based on fingerprints. Find this idea intriguing? Well, you can implement such security system at your house by spending a little over Rs 7000.

Self-lacing Shoes
For super-lazy people like me, tying shoe laces is a tedious task. Therefore, I found self-lacing shoes to be the coolest thing in the Back to the Future trilogy. Over the years, shoe companies have failed to create such footwear. There's still some hope though as Nike is still working on this project, and is positive about releasing the product by the year end.

Flying Cars
Almost every second sci-fi movie set in the future showcases flying cars. However, they haven't become common in any part of the world so far. It's not that we don't have technology for that though. There are multiple companies working on this idea. Prototype of a Dutch flying car called PAL-V has already had a successful test flight.

Hoverboards
Similar to the self-lacing shoes, fans of Back to the Future are waiting for this product to become a reality. last year, a video showcasing demonstration of a working hoverboard got everyone's hopes high. Unfortunately, it turned out to be an elaborate hoax.

Food Hydrator
A cooking device that can turn a pie-sized compressed Pizza into a real big one is a foodie's dream come true. Undoubtedly, it could have been the next big thing after the microwave oven. Unfortunately, no company in the world has managed to build such appliance so far.
