27th Aug 2014Failing to crack the high-end smartphone segment, Nokia focused its efforts on the budget market. Its recent models such as the Lumia 520 and 630 did quite well in the market. Following its footsteps, Motorola released the Moto G in India, which became a runaway hit. Then came the Xiaomi Mi 3 that redefined what a budget smartphone should be. After the overwhelming response to its first handset, Xiaomi is all set to launch its Redmi 1S. Let's find out what it has to offer:
Design
The Redmi 1S doesn't look as fancy as its elder sibling, the Mi 3 that features a metallic unibody. This entry-level smartphone from Xiaomi sports a run-of-the-mill rectangular design with a plastic construction. On the bright side, you get the user-replaceable battery and a microSD card slot. Similar to the Lumia 530 it comes in variety of colours including Yellow, Red, and Cyan. At 10 mm, it's slimmer than the Moto and the Lumia 530.Screen
In the screen department, the Redmi 1S blow the competition out of the water. For starters, it packs in a 4.7-inch HD screen with pixel dimensions of 720x1280 pixels. That translates into the pixel density of 312 ppi, which is great considering the phone's price tag. The Redmi 1S packs in an IPS type display that offers great colour reproduction and wide viewing angles. This is something that the similarly priced 520 and Moto E lack.Processor And RAM
Xiaomi is known for delivering powerful hardware at affordable prices, and its Redmi 1S is no exception. ThisRs 7000Rs 6000 phone packs in a quad-core Snapdragon 400 chipset that's usually found in sub-15k devices such as Moto G. It comes with Adreno 305 GPU and 1 GB RAM. In comparison, the Moto E packs in a dual-core Snapdragon 200 chip and the Lumia 530 has a quad-core Snapdragon 200 processor. Undoubtedly, the Redmi 1S is a clear winner here.Camera
The Redmi 1S features an 8 megapixel autofocus camera. Xiaomi has also thrown in an LED flash. For video calling there's also a front-facing camera. The phone lets you record HD videos at 30 fps. On the other hand, the Moto E and Lumia 530 come with a 5 megapixel camera. The optics on both the devices lack LED flash and autofocus feature. In terms of video recording, 480p is the max these two phones can offer. So at least on paper, the Redmi 1S comes across as a better option.Storage
The Xiaomi Redmi 1S offers 8 GB of internal storage. Plus, you can extend it further via microSD card slot. The Moto E and Lumia 530, on the other hand come with paltry 4 GB storage. Thankfully, these handsets also support microSD card slot.Software
This is one area where the Redmi 1S gets beaten by the competition. It runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with a MIUI skin on top. Xiaomi's customisation is quite different than the stock Android. As many of you would already know, the Moto E comes with Android 4.4 Kitkat with no bloatware. Nokia's entry-level phone also runs the latest Windows Phone 8.1 out-of-the-box.As far as the hardware is concerned, Redmi 1S blows the competition out of the water. However, at this point, after-sales service is the area of concern. Let's hope that Redmi 1S users won't run into the problems that the Mi 3 customers did.
