Chandrakant 'CK' Isi
31st Jul 2014The LG G3 is meant to take on the GALAXY S5, Xperia Z2, and HTC One (M8). The phone has got everything to please the number junkies. The G3 flaunts a 13 megapixel camera with Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) and laser-focusing mechanism, 1-Watt speaker, KNOCK Code, and Quick Circle. For details on each and every aspect of this phone, go through our comprehensive review. However, if you're in hurry or have short attention span, here are quick pointers on whether or not you should buy this handset.
First let's talk about its strong points:
Camera
The G3's camera features a laser-assisted auto-focus mechanism, which offers incredibly fast focusing. To cancel the effects of shaky hands, the G3 is equipped with OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation), which we've seen in the high-end Lumia phones. With all these enhancements in place, the G3 produces crisp shots with accurate colours. The G3's 13 megapixel camera is among the best in the current crop of Android flasghips. So if you're looking for a powerful smartphone with a great camera, the G3 is the way to go.
Super-Sharp Screen
The LG G3's 5.5-inch IPS screen is insanely sharp. It packs in 1440x2560 pixels, which make up for the pixel density of 534 ppi. To put things in perspective, the iPhone 5s has pixel density of 326. The text in webpages look extremely crisp. In India, no other reputed brand offers such pixel packed screen. Plus, since it's an IPS screen, the colours look lively.Excellent Multimedia Performance
Powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 801 chipset, the G3 offers great performance. The high-end games run without any issue. It offers impressive sound output. Plus, the video player is packed with features. It supports most video formats including MP4, DivX, XviD, and MKV out-of-the-box. You can even zoom into videos with pinch gesture. All in all, it makes-up for an excellent multimedia device. Now that you know the good stuff. Let's discuss the reasons why you shouldn't go for this handset:
Interface
The LG G3 offers Android 4.4 Kitkat with the highly modified user interface. Dubbed the Optimus UI, it is actually a bit toned-down compared to what was there on the early LG handsets. However, cheesy animation effects can be still found across the interface. Even the lock screen is sprinkled with Particle (Glitter), Soda, Vector Circle effects. Much like Samsung's TouchWiz, LG's software overwhelms users with information. Especially, the multitasking menu and notification bar look too crowded.Body Is Prone To Scratches
The G3's faux-metal finish looks much better than its predecessor's glossy body. However, the plastic body is still prone to scratches. In our case, the phone started showing up a web of hairline scratches within a week. Plus, the rear 'Lock' button lost its colour at a few spots. This is something you don't expect from a Rs 50,000 phone. Not Ideal For Single Handset Use
The G3 features a 5.5-inch screen, which is excellent for watching movies and playing games. Thanks to the thin bezels, the G3 is one of the most compact "phablets" in the market. That said, considered as a mobile phone, the G3 is too big. It's not something you can comfortably use with one hand. So, if you're looking for a handy phone, the G3 is not for you.
