12th Jun 2014Built by ex-Yahoo employees, and now owned by Facebook, WhatsApp is the world's most popular messenger. The cross platform messaging service has over 500 million monthly active users. The company claims that its servers deliver more than 10 billion messages each day! This should give you an idea about just how popular this app is. So when WhatsApp went missing from Windows Phone Store, it was a huge blow for Microsoft. All its Windows Phone 8 devices that had started gaining some traction in the market are now not even considered by most buyers. Since Microsoft is taking its own sweet time to fix the issue, users are returning their newly purchased WP handsets in favour of Android. If you too are annoyed by the lack of WhatsApp on your device, but not willing to give-up on your Lumia yet, here are a few alternatives you should try out.
WeChat
Developer: Tencent WeChat Limited
WeChat is the closest you get to WhatsApp on Windows Phone. The app offers free texting, voice messages, and video calls. The Chinese messaging client has over 300 million users. You can chat with your friends, create groups, and even send animated smileys. The app supports push notifications on Windows Phone. The developer has recently added a location sharing feature to the app.Sounds creepy, but majority of users find it useful.

Developer: Facebook Inc.
If there's a place to find all your WhatsApp buddies, it has got to be Facebook. The Messenger app is a standalone client to chat with your Facebook contacts. You can get all your FB messages without having to open the social networking website. It supports emoticons, new stickers, and photo sharing. You can even start group conversations, just like WhatsApp. To let your friends know your whereabouts, the app comes with location sharing.

Developer: Telegram Messenger LLP
Ngram is the best Telegram client for Windows Phone. The app is so well designed that Telegram has plans to promote it as an official WP client. With Telegram, you can create group chats with up to 200 people so you can stay connected with everyone at once. Plus, you can share videos up to 1 GB, send multiple photos from the web, and forward any media you receive. What separates it from the crowd is the focus on security. Telegram offers secret Chats with an option to select the level of encryption. You can can program the messages to self destruct from both devices so there is never any record of it.

Developer: Viber Media Inc.
Here's another feature packed app that lets you text and share files on-the-go. Similar to Skype, Viber offers free calls to your online friends and cheap call-rates for landline numbers. In Viber, phone number is your ID. The app syncs with your mobile contact and detects which of your contacts have Viber. You can also make groups with up to 100 friends. With push-notifications in place, you won't miss a call or message, even when the application is not open.

Developer: Microsoft Corporation
GroupMe was acquired by Skype in 2011. Later, when Microsoft picked-up Skype, they automatically got the ownership of GroupMe. As its name suggests, the app is all about group messaging. It's a well designed app that supports push notifications and live tile updates. It's fast, reliable, and supports our favourite GIFs. You can be a part of the conversation from web too - just go to app.groupme.com. On the flipside, the app is not ideal for one-to-one chatting. Overall, it's quite an interesting app with a lot of potential. Microsoft should fuse GroupMe with Skype to get back in the messenger game, but right now the software giant is not paying much attention to it.
